We recently reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was on track to implement some important new regulations that would require sunscreen manufacturers to be much more accurate in their labeling. However, due to manufacturers finding it difficult to meet the June 2012 deadline, the FDA has announced that they will have another six months to comply with the laws. Smaller companies will have even longer, until December 2013.

Under the new laws, the FDA was set to implement the changes in order to protect consumers from misleading and potentially harmful labels. Manufacturers would have to clearly distinguish which sunscreens are “broad spectrum” (they protect ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B rays), and cannot claim that their products are “sweatproof” or “water resistant”. Even more importantly, only sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher can claim to protect against skin cancer; anything with a lower SPF can only claim to protect against sunburn.

While the FDA argues that the extension is justified to prevent sunscreen shortages, many are still concerned that this is more than just a bump in the road. “The FDA took a major step backwards today, and as a result, more consumers will likely get burned this summer,” Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed told the Associated Press.

The job of your foundation is to enhance your natural beauty, not cover it up. That’s why it’s important to find a formula that matches your skin tone, compliments your skin type (normal to oily, normal to dry), and gives you just the amount of coverage you’re looking for. You may be thinking “Who has the time to try each and every one?” The answer is: You don’t need to, I’ve done it for you!

The foundation you choose to invest in should give you all the results you want. With summer right around the corner, we want one that won’t melt away the moment you step out in our sundresses and sunglasses! We also want one that simply feels good on the face. Each of these are buildable so you can customize the amount of coverage you like through the seasons. It’s best to start with a small amount, go over the entire face, and then add more to build coverage. They also have staying power! And best of all, they make your skin look even-toned and flawless. In fact, they’re all so good- you may find yourself alternating between all five.

When asked, “If you could only have three beauty products to use the rest of your life, which would you choose?” most women answer with the same three items: mascara, concealer, and eyeliner. Somehow, eyeliner always makes us look a little more human on the days we’ve only had three hours of sleep, and way more dramatic on the nights we need to be at the top of our game at some event.

This season, designers have brought eyeliner into an entirely new light. They’ve featured our favorite must-have beauty product on the runway in ways we’ve never seen, and in some ways we’ve never even imagined. The best part of the trend is that even though the looks are dramatic, they’re completely wearable by those of us who can be a little makeup-shy. From extreme cat eyes to smudged raccoon eyes to disconnected liner, we’re absolutely inspired by these runway looks to run to the beauty supply store after work. These looks take a little bit of practice and, of course, the right tools, so we’ve got you covered on which kind of eyeliner to use to achieve each of these trends. Try out some of these looks and don’t forget to smize!

We’re all familiar with the scents of summer: the beach, flowers, fire pits, fresh fruit, the list goes on. Every year, getting a whiff of your favorite past times brings back your most cherished memories. Granted, the season definitely has some of the best smells a season could have (just think about it: winter is reminiscent of snow and cough syrup), and new perfumes coming out soon are making summer smell even better.

Some of our favorite designers and beauty companies have come out with this season’s most wanted fragrances. From Burberry’s Burberry Brit Summer to Gucci’s Flora Glamorous Magnolia, we can’t stop spritzing these new perfumes. If you’re going to the beach, a more minimalist scent will go perfectly. Date night lends itself to a more romantic scent, like sandalwood, and if you’re feeling really gutsy, you can even share CK One Summer with your man. Whichever you choose as your summer fragrance (or if you choose more than one), the list of summer perfumes we’ve put together is sure to be a hit. Who knows, maybe you’ll prefer one of these to the scent of the beach.

Which summer scent are you swooning over? Tell us in the comment section below.

As we all know, May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, which leads to many talks about the proper way to wear sunscreen and how often we should be getting our skin checked. But, to be really healthy, this is a routine that you should be following year-round. A great example of this can be found in actress and Neutrogena spokesperson Gabrielle Union.

Union is working with Neutrogena to spread awareness for sun safety, and I had the chance to speak with her about her skincare routine, her thoughts on girls who don’t protect their skin, and her flawless skin secrets. And let me tell you — by looking at her glowing complexion, you want to take any advice she gives!

Can you first start by explaining what your daily routine is, including sun care?

Well it depends on if I am working or not. Just coming off of a job where we worked outside quite a bit, daily, anything that has salicylic acid is what I use for my face wash because I love the smell — I use my pink grapefruit cleanser, and sometimes when I’m having more breakouts than other times, I’ll use the clean cleanser then the toner then the ultra-sheer block. These are my favorite for daily use. This will go under my moisturizer and makeup. Then they pack on the makeup for work. At home I don’t usually wear makeup so I’ll use face wash toner and the ultra-sheer block and call it a day.

Many teens and adolescents don’t really understand the importance of sun protection — I have a problem convincing my sister of it. What would you say to them?

Well, those girls in their teens will eventually become my age. I had friends that would take bacon grease and want to be crispy basically. We’re looking at Tanning Mom and going “That’s crazy,” but inside they’re like “What is she using?!” I wish it was something just with young girls, but if that’s your mentality you don’t eventually grow out of it. It seems that the darker they can get the better. I think there are certain shows, perhaps on TV, where the GTL lifestyle is promoted as the optimal look. And in reality you’re exposing yourself to skin cancer. The first burn you’re putting yourself on the path to danger. It’s all fun and games until you have skin cancer. GTL only goes so far until you have to go to skin cancer treatments – and the moles start changing and the cute Cindy Crawford ones become Melanoma. And it’s not as cute as you thought, and is it really worth it at the end of the day? I’ve read stories where these girls want to be a little bit darker, and a little mole gets bigger, and these girls are no longer with us. I can say it’s absolutely not worth it. Neutrogena has a number of self-tanners. There are other ways of achieving a browner you without exposing yourself to skin cancer.

You’re obviously always on set, what great tips have you learned from your makeup artist/hairstylist backstage?

The biggest and most inexpensive that anyone can do is water. I try to drink a gallon a day. And it’s made a huge difference in my hair, skin and nails, it grows! I generally don’t have major skin flare-ups because I’m so hydrated, but my hair is growing, my nails are growing, my skin is staying clear and it helps with my weight loss. Just substituting little things out of your diet like soda, juice, any sort of sugary drink — there’s no need to have flavor water when you can have regular water — just throw a little lemon in there if you want to look fancy. But that’s been the best and easiest secret.

You’re obviously traveling a lot, what are those top five beauty products that you have to have with you when go?

I generally fly back and forth between LA and Miami, one hot place to the next. So I don’t leave sunscreen behind. This Neutrogena Ultra Sheer sunscreen is great, and this isn’t even as high as I go. I go to 110, I don’t mess around mainly because I started to get freckles after I’ve gotten older and I thought they were cute at first but now I see it’s a sign of aging. And more moles are popping up. I am doing anything in my power to not have them; I generally get moles all over.

Water, I travel with, if I am able to — I can’t take it on the plane. I went to CVS and got a 2-quart jug and I fill it twice a day to make sure I drink a crap load of water. Also lip balm, for winter and summer because people sometimes think that when you’re dehydrated a lot of sunburns can happen on your lips — lip gloss over chapped lips looks like lip gloss over chapped lips and lip stick over chapped lips is just awful. Oh, and mascara is a must — and deodorant! It’s in my purse, I don’t mess around. I’m always in a hot climate and I’m like, “What stinks?! It’s me.” No funky monkey. So now I keep deodorant in my bag.

Why did you choose to get involved with the Choose Skin Health?

There’s a program on chooseskinhealth.com you can go to and find a dermatologist in your area that will give you a free skin cancer screening — I’m all about free — it’s like a luxury, like teeth whitening for a lot of people, it’s not a reality. They’ve made it affordable for a lot of people. Also, a lot of people, especially women of color don’t think they are at risk, which is not the case. We burn as well, I didn’t used to understand that when my skin peels off in large chunks like a Sci Fi movie that’s bad. Everyone’s like “Black people don’t burn” but yes, we burn as well — so do Latinas, Asians and everyone else, so just as a reminder as one of the darker Neutrogena gals, if I have to be worried about it, everyone has to be worried about it.

Neutrogena is also working on a Buy 1 Donate 1 campaign for the month of May, to help provide sunscreen for families in need. Watch the video below to find out more:

Today marks Day 1 of Cannes Film Festival in France. While us common folk are trying to book summer vacations and tackle the ever-present issue of humidity hating our hair, celebrities are flying off to France for the Festival de Cannes and vying for some decent exposure (and maybe a prize or two). For anyone unfamiliar with the yearly event, this is where movies like The Artist and Drive (starring our favorite man candy, Ryan Gosling) got their start.

This year, some of the American ladies throwing their hats into the competition are Kristen Stewart, Eva Mendes and Nicole Kidman. We’re never disappointed by these women, even if their red carpet looks are absolute disasters. We do, however, have a few predictions for what we might see from them in the beauty department.

As true fashionistas know, makeup and clothes go hand in hand to really rock a look. We’ve teamed up with Simply Vera Vera Wang to show you how to get some of your favorite trends of the season, from florals to bold prints and how to incorporate some of the hottest makeup looks at the same time. We’ll take you step by step through the entire makeup look, explaining what you need to achieve each look and why it works with the fashion trend. Look out for more to come in the next few days!

With spring here in full-force, florals are all we want to be pulling out of our closets right now. Whether they are in the form of flowing dresses, sheer blouses or bouncy skirts anything that has a flower print is instantly being stockpiled now that the sun is constantly shining.

To compliment these floral prints, a makeup look has to be wisely chosen to complete your spring wardrobe. When most people think of spring, we think of light, luminescent and glowing skin with neutral, shimmery makeup to complete the look. We recruited the help of makeup artist Andie Markoe-Bryne and the new Simply Vera Vera Wang Cosmetics Collection — available exclusively at Kohl’s stores nationwide and Kohls.com — to get the look for our next floral outfit, concentrating on gorgeous, glowing skin and rosy cheeks. The new collection marks Vera Wang’s first venture into beauty and is designed to enhance a woman’s natural features.

“Makeup should let the real you shine through,” says Wang. “Skin is your best accessory.”

Above, Andie explains to us the steps for a gorgeous glowing complexion and soft smokey eye — both of which are ideal compliments to a bold floral print.

Serge Normant, the masterful hands responsible for the gorgeous tresses of Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts and many others is branching out of hair care and into fragrance. His debut scent, a hair and body eau de parfum called Avah (meaning desire and life) is based off the scent in his signature line of cleansers and styling aids for hair, with a base of musks and a touch of ylang-ylang, jasmine, and amber.

Normant noted that launching a scent “felt a little ambitious, but I thought, designers do it; why can’t I?” As for the product itself, it’s meant to boost hair health as well. Normant didn’t create the scent specifically for hair, but added ingredients such as Vitamin E and jojoba oil to make sure the juice wasn’t drying or damaging.

Serge Normant Avah Eau de Parfum, $60, available June 1 at www.sergenormant.com
