Karlie Kloss Naked in Allure: Is She Too Young?

Posted by Rachel Adler September 21, 2011 12:24 pm 19Comments

Pictures are flying across the internet as we speak of Karlie Kloss posing topless for Mario Testino‘s lens in the October issue of Allure magazine. The stunning model is featured showing off navy nail polish, killer bangs and lots and LOTS of skin.

Testino obviously has a past of shooting risque photographs (really, how many times has he shot Kate Moss in the buff?) but many people on the forum The Fashion Spot have voiced their opinion about Kloss being too young — as she is still just 19.

When we’re talking about something such as a beauty editorial where the focus is supposed to be on the nails, hair or makeup, do you think it’s necessary for such a risque shot? Or do you think the baring-of-the-boobs actually takes away from the story?

I don’t understand the sexualization of women in women’s magazines in the first place… women are about more than their (perfect) ##### or bum, non?

  • Eva

sorry, clearly you’re not allowed to put that word in writing, but it’s what on display in these pictures.

I didn’t know the adult legal age was raised to FIFTY?

  • Laughing at you

Heres to the absolutely rediculous double standards of one of the prudish countries in the world. The Poor misguided Americans who love to have guns, destruction, blood and guts, but when it comes to things as simple and beautiful as human nudity THIS is where they draw the line?

Every time a picture of a pretty model that is 19 is taken, and when she looks like she is 15, some people get all strung out on the age factor, get over it I say. Especially since she is legal age, and especially since she made her own decision to do them.

Young people of 18 are dying for their country, they are judged to be old enough to make that decision so surely this young woman can decide on how she is portrayed!

Why do magazines use really hot looking, young looking women to sell products in provocative looking pictures, nearly nude? Because not only does it sell their product, but it also catches the eye of people and even if it doesn’t sell the product that the model is wearing or showing off, it gets the name of the company into the persons head, because the man who see’s the picture will remember it the next time he see’s the product or the manufacturer of the product.
And some women will look at the ad and will want the product because they want to be like the model, so the best way ad companies have found to sell product that involve clothing or beauty is to have a nearly nude male or female model showing off that product.

    Obviously Eva hasn’t read a lot of mags lately . . .

There are many civilized countries in the world where women, or girls sunbathe topless or even nude on the beach. I know a 20 year old Belgian woman who does sunbathe in the nude. She appreciates admiring glances, she eats like a bird and works out 2+hours a day. She once told me that the feeling is similar to when people look at my Porsche with admiring glances. I’m proud. Granted, she does not appreciate and nor do I, when American tourists “Gawk” at her or try to take pictures standing beside her. But, we all know the “prudish” Americans, they love the pics of nude girls or pics of them standing with nude girls so they can tell their friends about the wild vacation they had between bombing raids. If you want obscene, watch Jersey Shores. Much of the world believes that Jersey Shores represents the “Average” American faimily. So, Prudish is spelt in American with an “F” and a “U”, & you get the picture.

i think the pictures shown here are beautiful…..the human body should be celebrated, geez louise already! people are so uptight

another example of the close-mindedness of American culture. Yes, she’s a bit young for some but in some places she’s of legal age and perfectly able to decide for herself. My other argument is that society itself promotes this by encouraging younger generations of being more active earlier. The fashion industry has been for years employing under-aged girls for shows (some of what they wear isn’t much more than these pictures). Take it for what it is, the artistic work of someone. I doubt that they had malicious intentions when taking these pictures.

FYI, I don’t read the magazine but some comments are just too funny to not reply

@Jim, thanks for making this all personal, actually I’ve had a subscription on Vogue UK for about 3 years now, I love it, I just don’t always mindlessly agree with everything, guess being an academic teaches you that. Btw, I’m Dutch and I know what it’s like to have too much sexualization going on in your country. But go ahead, just look at the b**bs and don’t think.

Here’s an idea if you don’t like the pics; DON”T BUY THE MAGAZINE!!! Duh!

The problem is little girls will want to walk around topless now. It only adds to the little girls dressed like strippers problem. Pictures like this don’t help. Nothing wrong with nudity but when children started behaving sexually, that’s pretty disturbing.

Are you kidding me ? Is this a joke? If people are even commenting on this as an issue then a lot of people have their priorities messed up. Look at whats happening around the world people!!

  • Leesha

I don’t think it’s inappropriate…for a lingerie add. She isn’t really showing anything you can’t see in a bikini top, but the nudity is completely unnecessary. The add is for nail polish. It doesn’t NEED to be sexual. The nudity is distracting.

I’m sorry but the young model is so perfect she doen’t even look rea l! I don’t find it offensive. If anything all the publicity it’s causing is certainly getting peoples attention. To me it’s not any worse than Madona’s publicity stunts. Smart thinking if you ask me.

  • Anthrobabe

I was thinking the problem wasn’t her age or nudity but lack of #####! She looks much younger – like a school girl rather than her actual age – so it could be fodder for pedophilia types.

I’d be fine with it if she was more ‘developed’ so the actual age was more apparent. I do however agree with the Americans being prudes comments, she IS of age.

  • Anna

sorry, i don’t see anything wrong here. nothing more than i’d see at the beach. if you don’t like it, don’t look at it.
